Shaheen Khan (Director)- A Truly Awe-Inspiring Role Model Of Both The Nostalgic Past And Today's Contemporary World

Shaheen Khan, a polished graduate of Dhaka University in Economics and Business Administration, spans her tremendous career in Fashion Retailing and Hospitality Management since 1973.

She opened her first successful venture, her children's clothing boutique "Oasis" in 1973. Going exceedingly strong 12 years later, Mrs Khan coordinated highly successful fashion shows and high fashion sales of Jersey apparels in 1985 in Pan Pacific Hotel, Dhaka. Shaheen Khan has held several rarified fashion exhibitions retailing ethnically inspired hand-woven Jamdani sarees and salwar kameezes in Karachi. She has also appeared in fashion features in the city's local Dawn Newspaper and as well in renowned Purple Magazine in Dhaka. With all the extreme confidence of being a global traveller and an internationally respected businesswoman, she has held best-selling saree and semi-precious self designed jewellery exhibitions in the extremely reputable hotels and homes of her well established friends in Dubai, London and Toronto. In 1993 multi-talented Mrs Khan completed an advanced diploma in Art and Design from Syful Islam Art Academy. She then went on to host a much acclaimed exhibition showcasing Oriental art, still life and landscapes.

Being married to a leading textile industrialist for over 30 years, she has always been assured of having access to readily available resources necessary to become a high-profile reputable female entrepreneur in Dhaka. Recently in collaboration with her creatively inspired daughter, she launched an extensive new range of gorgeous handmade high fashion bib necklaces & matching clutch bags to demonstrate the unique hand-beaded detailing crafted in Bangladesh. In June 2010 she hosted a super successful two day Bibs, Bags & Beads exhibition in both Dhaka and London received heart-warming accolades and a fantastic turnover. Her Bibs & Bags are now in displayed in renowned worldwide fashion events such as the Global Fashion Festival, Asian Life Style Show and Zee Carnival to name but a few.

Shaheen Khan is a dedicated homemaker and a creative designer in her own right. Her artistic flair stems from her innate sense of style, exotic travels and the inspirational people and places that surround her. From decades of serious fashion designing to learning different techniques involved with intricate jewellery making, she is always passionate about whatever she puts her mind to before magically turning it into a flourishing success. Her designs are unparalleled, stemming from her originality and understanding of and sincerity towards multi-cultural awareness.

Being an instinctive fashion diva producing the best in women's fashion and accessories, Shaheen Khan alternatively has also shown a keen interest in fresh ingredient cooking and exquisite fine dining. In 1988 she completed advanced diplomas in Thai and continental cooking from reputable Parjatan Corporation and Thai House culinary institute in Dhaka and Bangkok. Not one to rest on her laurels, in 1994 she opened one of the city's finest Italian restaurant Spaghetti Jazz.and in 2011 another culinary delight Pan Tao offering the very best of authentic Thai cuisine, in a bona fide Thai setting.

To cement things even further, in 1997 she launched her own beauty salon and Spa Bliss offering ladies the very best in personalized beauty services, skin-care and varied spa packages. In 2008 Bliss was recognised as one of the leading beauty salons and spas in Bangladesh and was awarded the "Most Progressive Salon & Spa Dhaka" award. It also received the "Aroma Gold Plus Salon Spa and Status" by Pawee Radaa, one of Thailands most prestigious skin care houses.

To cement things further, in 1995 Mrs Khan was appointed Bangladesh's General Sales Agent for KLM the Royal Dutch Airlines and was successful in inaugurating the first arrival of the aircraft to Hazrat Shajalal International Airport from Amsterdam.

During her rare moments of leisure, energetic and sporty Shaheen Khan enjoys playing golf. In 1987 she was one of the first Bengali female golfers in Dhaka and having started off the trend, there are now approximately 50 active lady golfers. In 1999 her excellent interpersonal communications skills and leadership abilities meant she was unanimously appointed the honour of being the first Bangladeshi female golf captain in Kurmitola Golf Club. Shaheen Khan won the women's crown in the Techno-Foki Monsoon Golf Tournament as well as winning well-deserving trophies in several other prestigious tournaments like the Aga Khan Gold cup and the Sarc Golf tournament in Lahore, Pakistan.

Shaheen Khan is very sincere and passionate about playing an active role in community contribution and charitable organisations. In 1988 she joined Zonta International -a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide, through service and advocacy. For three consecutive years between 1995 and 1997 she was president of the organization in Dhaka and was committed to expanding women's access to skills training and income-generating activities, which lead to sustainable livelihoods and economic independence. In 2000 Mrs Khan opened a school in her local village Manikganj, to offer free education to the underprivileged in the rural society. This was an extremely successful project as it was nominated as the first of its kind to achieve a 100% HSC exam pass rate. As the Vice-Principal she visits the campus frequently to give motivational speeches providing enthusiasm and dedication to the students.

Mrs Khan sums it up best in her own words, "I turned my Passions - Fashion and Cooking - into Business." This simple yet profound statement belies the earnest hard work and long hours involved in directing a career that not only benefitted her extended family members, but also took account of the under-priviledged in society. By cutting across national and social boundaries, she has shown it is possible to be successful and considerate simultaneously. Shaheen Khan is truly an awe-inspiring role model of both the nostalgic past and today's contemporary world.
